Fall 2013: Tartan VS Plaid

Well, you've probably already figured out, if you follow Elle Decor, that tartan/plaid is big this fall in fashion and preppy checkered prints. This means it's going to trickle down into the interior design world. .

One thing that a lot of people get confused on, myself included, is the difference between tartan and plaid.

From what I understand, everything started with the Scottish. Plaids are pieces of clothing or blankets, no matter what design is on them. The print was usually tartan, so people would get confused and call the tartan, plaid. Tartan is defined as a pattern, and that pattern is of varying colors and varying widths of bands that lap over each other and create right angles. All of this happens over a solid colored background. Did you get that? My brain hurts. Yeah, well anyways, if it looks plaid it's tartan. If you want to call it plaid, it's perfectly acceptable here in North America. There is no difference between the two, (unless you live in Scotland) and really that's all that most of us need to know.

  1. At first I was like what's the difference? But now I get it. The tartan pattern is really cool!

  2. Oh yes this is a fun trend and also has a wee bit of an 80's edge.

  3. I saw a picture a few days ago somewhere of a home office with plaid (tartan?) wallpaper. It wasn't really my thing, although I love it for clothing. I just can't picture myself even using it with a pillow around my house. But, the funny thing about home design is that sometimes what we hate one minute we love the next, so who knows if after seeing it all over the place I'd suddenly get a taste for it. We'll see! :)

    1. I'm not a big fan of it for the house, but checked prints are preppy and I do tend to have a leaning towards preppy interiors. Of course, I like a lot of stuff. I'm with you, though, I think it may grow on me more. I do like it for clothing, if it's done right.

    1. I never really thought of it past a preppy decorated room, but I bet it would look amazing in a library! I do like it for clothes. It will have to grow on me beyond that.

  5. Hmmm liking it for clothing...not so much on decor...except a blanket! Those types of blankets are so cozy. That is fine by me. But for clothing I have my share of tartan printed shirts

  7. I am old school and have always worn tartan/plaid whatever it may be called. I love the Black Watch plaid. I can't see it used in my home, but I am definitely up for designing a room around it: it would be such a handsome gentlemans room!

    1. You know, I've never thought of it for a gentleman's room! I think that would be amazing! I think I was thinking too much from a woman's perspective.
