Here is one of the things we have been working on. This was the ugly door in my dining room that is not so ugly anymore.
Remember? It started out like this:
Here is what we did:
Sanded the door.
Primed 2 coats.
Sanded again.
Primed again.
Sanded again.
Used level to mark where we wanted our molding to go.
Put masking tape up to see what it would look like.
All of our measurements, except for the bottom of the door, were 4 inches apart.
Bought molding 1 1/2 inches wide (anything less thick didn't look right to us).
Tried to make the molding stick on with liquid nails and it wouldn't. I'm sure we could have laid the door down and put some heavy stuff on the door and waited 7 days til it dried. I didn't have that much patience. So I used a hot glue gun. Yes. I know. All the carpenters are cringing. It worked though really well. That molding wouldn't budge.
We then caulked the crap outta the door and painted it with porch and floor paint. I reasoned that porch and floor paint is much more scratch resistant, plus I had an unused gallon from my last residence. I can be cheap like that.
Hmmm... I'm thinking of adding an aged brass kick plate if I can find one. I used the aged brass knob that was already on the door.
We are now working on making a console table for the dining room out of a side table that was damaged.
The dining room isn't finished yet we still have to:
Finish painting the ceilings and baseboards.
Buy a host and hostess chair
Add wine rack
Add the console table
Bring in art
Awesome door! It's Amazing how much character it adds to the room now with the trim molding and black paint. I love black painted doors too. Nice job!

LOL! I reread it and realize how it sounds. It does sound like I'm calling it ugly at first. Ha! I'm glad you liked it anyways! :D
DeleteLove it. I especially love the color you chose!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Albertina!
DeleteThe molding is such a nice touch to your already beautiful dining area. And I use glue guns for everything, so I actually love that you used it for this project. XOXO
ReplyDeleteI love that you love that I used glue guns! Thanks for the nice words.
DeleteThat is a beautiful door! The contrast it has makes such a difference. I love black and colorful doors. (I would have totally done the hot glue thing...)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Melissa. I am such a fan of colorful doors, too. I'm glad your down with glue guns. Sorry, my husband is listening to House of Pain right now.

DeleteHi Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI would have never thought to paint a door black, but that looks absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had guts like that. Thank you for sharing.
Sincerely,
Karina
Hi Karina. Thank you so much for the nice thoughts. I never really thought of it as daring, since the original door was so ugly. lol.....If it had been a solid wood door, that would have been a hard decision for me. I'm so glad you thought it was bold, though!
DeleteWow does one door makeover bring that room up to date! Love the difference it makes. I want to wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year! All the best to you and hope 2014 is a great year for you. xo Nancy
