"D" is for..... How To Know You've Been Homeschooling Too Long

Design Fluff is brought to you today by the letter "D."
We had a little trouble sleeping last night. So, we stayed up a little later than usual. The little one, Ricky Jr., was fidgeting with something. All of a sudden I seem to hear the words "Oh sh*t".  I decided I didn't hear it and tried to get some sleep.  Suddenly, my oldest is threatening to tell about something. The little one is begging for mercy. Yeah, I heard it alright.

Oldest: Mom, I have something to tell you.
Youngest: I'm sorry mommy. Please, please forgive me!
Oldest: *Snickering*
Me: What is it? What did you say?
Youngest: Do you promise not to be mad at me?
Me: I won't be mad. What did you say?
Youngest: I said a D word.
Me: You did? What was the D word?
Youngest: I'm sorry, will you forgive me? I won't say it again!
Me: It's OK honey, I forgive you. Now what did you say?
Youngest: I said a D word.
Me: Where did you hear this word?
Youngest: Off of a video game.
Me: You did? What was it?
Youngest: D*mn.
Me: But I thought you said something else. Did you say d*mn or sh*t?
Youngest: I said sh*t, it's a D word.
Me: Oh no, honey. Sh*t is not a D word. See, listen....sh sh sh sh*t. Do you hear the shhh sound?
Youngest: Yes.
Me: Sh is for Sh*t. Now listen Da Da Da....D*mn.  D*mn is a D word cause D*mn makes the D sound. Do you see the difference?

I snapped out of teacher mode and suddenly realized what I was saying to my child! This is how you know you have been homeschooling too long!

*I hate that this even has to be said but here goes....We are not deliberate potty mouths. We simply don't freak out when our little one discovers a new word. We choose to simply teach him a better way.

    1. Yeah, we tend to be pretty low key about something done in innocence at our house. Thanks for visiting:)! I'm loving the customized book you made for your little one!

  5. bwah ha ha!!! Love it :) This isn't a homeschool thing, at least, I don't think so. I didn't homeschool my 3 boys and this sounds just like something I'd do. I could always tell by the youngest's laughter when the sh*t was about to hit the fan w/his brothers. I'd say "what did you do?" and he'd say, "Why do you think it was ME?"

And now that he's a father to an adorable 4 year old, I just sit back and laugh. Thanks for dropping by the other day :)

  6. So glad to know that I'm not the only mother that would do this! I really had no idea what I was doing, til I was finished and it dawned on me. You certainly don't look old enough to have a child that has a 4 year old!

Thanks for visiting me, I have been enjoying your articles on Google plus.

  9. LOL! Ha ha I have laughed so much at this. I didn't home school but it is just the sort of thing I did with my kids.
And the not freaking out bit is the most important. Our kids learn that it is safe to say anything to us and not have to be afraid of our reaction. That leaves us free to get on with the support/comfort/guidance needed. Then we can have our freakout later after the crisis and with another adult if we then need the help/support. I meant to encourage - not be preachy.

    1. Dee,
You sound like an amazing mommy! That's pretty much how I feel and handle things with my kids. It doesn't sound preachy at all to me! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment that everyone can be encouraged by:)

  12. **dying laughing** My son would come out with some real winners from time-to-time, and I'd say, "what did you say??" in a sort of funny mad scientist sort of way...he usually looked at me and repeated the word, saying it as a question. Now he's 9, so he knows most of the To Be Avoided words, but... the other day I caught him being naughty, and he said, "oh, s**t!! I mean, oh crap!!" I had to leave the room I was laughing so hard.
